Federal judge’s ruling is a victory for all Hoosier voters

Democratic Secretary of State Candidate Jim Harper released the following statement after an injunction was granted by the Southern District of the U.S. District Court to block the Indiana Secretary of State’s controversial policy to kick Hoosier voters off the voter rolls:

“The federal judge’s ruling is a victory for all Hoosier voters. This is yet another voter suppression tactic by Hoosier Republicans that has been put on ice.

“We should make it easier – not harder – for eligible Hoosiers to vote. And certainly not be kicking them off the rolls.

“Once again, the courts have come in to provide damage control over actions taken by Indiana’s unchecked supermajority.

“As Secretary of State, I will fight back against discriminatory voter purge policies and ensure that every registered voter can cast their ballot free of suppression and discrimination.”

Harper was born and raised in Valparaiso, and after completing his undergraduate degree at Indiana University, he studied law at Georgetown University. Upon graduation, he returned to his home state to serve as a clerk of the Federal court. He currently practices law in Porter County where he also serves on the board of a non-profit law firm that provides free and reduced-cost legal services to veterans. In 2016, Harper was the Democratic nominee for State Senate in the 5th District.
